What is the entrance gateway?

  • Grade Point Requirement: Students must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 (3.4 for non-California residents) in a-g courses mentioned on the website.
  • Only the marks you receive in “a-g” subjects in the tenth and eleventh years, including the summer sessions, are used to determine your approximate GPA. Courses you have completed in ninth and twelfth grades may be used to fulfill “a-g” Subject Standards if you have received a rating of C or above, which will not be used to determine your GPA.
  • Examination Requirement: All candidates may submit scores from either the ACT Examination with Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test with Essay.
  • UC no longer requires SAT subject tests, but some systems prescribe specific tests and you can use subject tests to meet the “a-g” requirements set out above or improve the submission by demonstrating mastery of a specific subject. In fact, the College of Engineering advises that all students take the Math Level 2 topic exam.

Minimum Eligibility vs. Selection

While the attainment of minimum eligibility is an important first step towards entry to the institution, the minimum eligibility does not guarantee access to your first-choice school. Since UCSB can not approve all qualifying candidates, as has been the case among many UC campuses in recent years, we use qualifications to choose students who are more successful than the minimum requirements. Such requirements, which the university considers selection criteria, recognize applicants who have shown a high academic performance and potential and who have a range of other characteristics that can relate to the quality and diversity of the campus community.
